Workshop: Introduction to Advanced Rhythm

Introduction to Advanced Rhythm is an interactive music workshop designed for schools, colleges, and universities that expands students’ rhythmic vocabulary through a global perspective. Rooted in the South Indian tradition of solkattu (spoken rhythm), the workshop explores subdivisions, shifting accents, polyrhythms, and odd meters found in jazz, contemporary classical, and world traditions.

Students engage through vocalisation, movement, and ensemble exercises, building precision, stamina, and creativity while discovering how rhythmic ideas connect across cultures, from Indian tala cycles to West African grooves and contemporary improvisation. By the end of the session, participants gain practical tools for composition, improvisation, and performance, while experiencing rhythm as a shared language that bridges musical traditions worldwide.
